Sri Lanka
The Coalition secretariat will work together with Women's Education and Research Centre (WERC) to manage the project’s domestic implementation. Together, the Asia Justice Coalition (AJC) and WERC will hold consultative meetings with women-led civil society groups, women legal practitioners, and researchers and conduct a systems-mapping exercise to identify the key legal needs related to international justice and accountability. Following this, AJC and WERC will design 1-2 interventions in Sri Lanka.
Founded in 1982, the Women’s Education and Research Centre (WERC) is one of the first feminist organizations to be established in Sri Lanka. Its mission is to work towards achieving gender justice through education, research, consciousness raising, capacity building
and advocacy, by using feminist intersectional approaches.
WERC has played a pivotal role in advancing women's rights over nearly four decades. WERC achieves its broad objectives of increasing women’s awareness, their resources, and opportunities for effective participation in the economic, political, and social life of the
country and remains a driving force in Sri Lanka’s women's movement.
Systems Mapping Exercise
On 4 and 5 June 2024, AJC and WERC conducted our first systems mapping exercise in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Together with women-led civil society groups, women legal practitioners, and researchers from diverse backgrounds across the country, we engaged in a series of exercises identifying dynamics preventing access to justice and accountability.
